Elevita has tried to aid wherever possible, and in 2021 we had the opportunity to help Hirly Arts Handicrafts grow their business by helping them build a Kubo, or crafts hut, and by purchasing needed equipment, such as a jigsaw machine and press drill, which are very important to their work. Prior to this they had to rent the machines, but now they can do the work in one week that previously took one month. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinG8Su8YnEzB5xSjXoOuNliR0spdZM-wZLlQ9WaSZPSbZGXhfkFaXesD9IUKEHurUZWQN35X_Kl7VkeI3C_cH0i00XEeQwZvvEaVTTNvPJRZB8ZBQTc86NKktCJDbVk01ELpo2hTJhWT-GyWgKOE23GN2yimq1d3xEegZkXvXegUJanbVtrs7IGin9/s748/Kubo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="748" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinG8Su8YnEzB5xSjXoOuNliR0spdZM-wZLlQ9WaSZPSbZGXhfkFaXesD9IUKEHurUZWQN35X_Kl7VkeI3C_cH0i00XEeQwZvvEaVTTNvPJRZB8ZBQTc86NKktCJDbVk01ELpo2hTJhWT-GyWgKOE23GN2yimq1d3xEegZkXvXegUJanbVtrs7IGin9/s320/Kubo.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6jI-yIPWnBx8qdoFlvJW3IVWux_6-m1S8kWVVj5l52uuG9_oDBT_gfV7fnDyUUxqLSAkaFC9lZUwtVYXM_BxBqoeP0DGzRDJyRcwobLVpEXHsGlWCxnCkb4kEJyUSQQVIpTvkfQ1W8CJKqHA_-67-OPe2_UuJFb_IRx-r2UcTGLyW7UUxGC982rGD/s748/IMG_6662.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="748" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6jI-yIPWnBx8qdoFlvJW3IVWux_6-m1S8kWVVj5l52uuG9_oDBT_gfV7fnDyUUxqLSAkaFC9lZUwtVYXM_BxBqoeP0DGzRDJyRcwobLVpEXHsGlWCxnCkb4kEJyUSQQVIpTvkfQ1W8CJKqHA_-67-OPe2_UuJFb_IRx-r2UcTGLyW7UUxGC982rGD/s320/IMG_6662.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-hUkh-snijqOKT_jjhHAuFZi86t3_XUJnCv7EjJLbXBqPPLS1KEFP63_T06sa99KdGC_w0Oo1LLqP23qkGeaNviOMBmEG3iCRtQaoCxJtVpFAJBAMnQwNX2ipfvnbDqjtek2MoPlPKhffO8zwGJFoRgCpneRJG1LU0bGkCVAoeMpbjiPqaJDPeTT8/s736/IMG_9530.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="736" data-original-width="500" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-hUkh-snijqOKT_jjhHAuFZi86t3_XUJnCv7EjJLbXBqPPLS1KEFP63_T06sa99KdGC_w0Oo1LLqP23qkGeaNviOMBmEG3iCRtQaoCxJtVpFAJBAMnQwNX2ipfvnbDqjtek2MoPlPKhffO8zwGJFoRgCpneRJG1LU0bGkCVAoeMpbjiPqaJDPeTT8/w271-h400/IMG_9530.JPG" width="271" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZKW_-8ucko-BqKrHk9t1C5osMGxsgFTSptDI2FPMcThxW-VzPyPqJz5MnV7pFYVIrvSmI8v8SXUw5sfIPmHE918PE8wppk_k3cYt1gZGOPMfcMhUlsnT188qt9F2UuX02uicXnOKIR2t64fwMPQc-5BCJoiPiIxOWcXeWi19PW1f2CLp0tjRG5KrS/s748/IMG_6664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="748" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZKW_-8ucko-BqKrHk9t1C5osMGxsgFTSptDI2FPMcThxW-VzPyPqJz5MnV7pFYVIrvSmI8v8SXUw5sfIPmHE918PE8wppk_k3cYt1gZGOPMfcMhUlsnT188qt9F2UuX02uicXnOKIR2t64fwMPQc-5BCJoiPiIxOWcXeWi19PW1f2CLp0tjRG5KrS/s320/IMG_6664.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729009658380689939.post-59615076698633719962020-11-15T07:18:00.023-08:002022-07-13T13:55:24.447-07:00Connecting with Mongolian Artisans in 2020<p> 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, but it hit our friends in developing countries especially hard. One place that has experienced severe changes is Mongolia, where artisans have traditionally relied on tourism to keep them in business. With tourism coming to a complete halt, families who depended on this livelihood were immediately cut off from their income. Thankfully, one of these artisans had heard of Elevita and reached out on behalf of his cooperative, "Youth for Success." Ganbold asked if Elevita could help these artisans find a global marketplace for their products, and needless to say, we were thrilled they found us!</p><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPg5ovXW7IUtoAcFnCX-LqzSfMNuBqZT5k8Kq0XQT7RIpLXRst_f2uiNtnbbpsKSZzvwwC9BvGOGqEd0XKhvhbUXL15TN45RrusASxkljJXgTJTcte8vM5KkYqrasOi0TkHhdfnPA4AhX-yN2Xc_AyJq1CRYzjWo8ImR7PMtY2iF3urOUCX1kC4u9t/s2021/wood-carver-Ganbold%20(3).jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="1339" data-original-width="2021" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPg5ovXW7IUtoAcFnCX-LqzSfMNuBqZT5k8Kq0XQT7RIpLXRst_f2uiNtnbbpsKSZzvwwC9BvGOGqEd0XKhvhbUXL15TN45RrusASxkljJXgTJTcte8vM5KkYqrasOi0TkHhdfnPA4AhX-yN2Xc_AyJq1CRYzjWo8ImR7PMtY2iF3urOUCX1kC4u9t/w400-h265/wood-carver-Ganbold%20(3).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Woodcarver Ganbold and his family work together to carve and varnish beautiful figures.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkxO2bMYWLGfRamCzU8mC-O5ZVcGsZQt2ur9UXKlrUbHEyaPzVBHVsrYWcPskSferqUrLFNt77EjIiYK7lZG5hlu-jRYsNjohOx91G4NmIDERMxc65qW9DXiD-hNFymYE6vGyZimr0D6tKK3eRE_63SliHVkTazBbO_6GGXdOia0VdgJbfrtcSJ9ka/s4032/MongolianNativity.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkxO2bMYWLGfRamCzU8mC-O5ZVcGsZQt2ur9UXKlrUbHEyaPzVBHVsrYWcPskSferqUrLFNt77EjIiYK7lZG5hlu-jRYsNjohOx91G4NmIDERMxc65qW9DXiD-hNFymYE6vGyZimr0D6tKK3eRE_63SliHVkTazBbO_6GGXdOia0VdgJbfrtcSJ9ka/w400-h300/MongolianNativity.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">This detailed pine wood nativity is in the style of 16th-century Manchu Dynasty.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5v31OLXHNe10Ir5e_vLi4kyRIv6rCB59ZK2vzvnWiExA5W7ufcFX54jFyMS3f0-IXA6JlWGIIBcjj_T0jyhfxlc6XsiV3lMfy9RtjJyhS7lnDJgTzN2CnhCgJaMLPLnVEdoGaJom0soKa_qaAF2plMXbfEkERaro30W5u3OhVczXM_9n4ST-IZipr/s560/FeltArtisan.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="410" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5v31OLXHNe10Ir5e_vLi4kyRIv6rCB59ZK2vzvnWiExA5W7ufcFX54jFyMS3f0-IXA6JlWGIIBcjj_T0jyhfxlc6XsiV3lMfy9RtjJyhS7lnDJgTzN2CnhCgJaMLPLnVEdoGaJom0soKa_qaAF2plMXbfEkERaro30W5u3OhVczXM_9n4ST-IZipr/w293-h400/FeltArtisan.jpg" width="293" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Ariuntuya creates needle felt dolls to provide for her family's needs. Batik is an ancient art that has been practiced for 2,000 years in southeast Asia. This complex dyeing process creates beautiful, intricate designs that are unique to the region they come from or tell a story. The process uses dye-resistant wax to create elaborate patterns and designs, and the wax is then washed to reveal the batik pattern or the process is repeated to create multiple colors. </div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
The first step in batik making is to stretch a piece of cotton or silk onto a frame and paint (“<em style="box-sizing: border-box;">cat”) </em>or stamp (“<em style="box-sizing: border-box;">cop”)</em> a design on the fabric using a mixture of beeswax and resin.</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
Each stamp is hand-made, and batik artisans create repeating patterns with a single stamp. </div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><img alt="" src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0895/5446/files/IMG_6328_Fotor_1024x1024.jpg?7149684832044390946" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Painting designs are done using a </span><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">canting,</em><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> a pen-like instrument that draws the hot wax onto the fabric. The tip of the </span><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">canting</em><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"> is usually made of copper in order for the wax to flow smoothly onto the cloth and be placed exactly where the artisan draws, and the holder is wood so that the heat is only conducted into the wax instead of the artisan's hand. </span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Next, the dye is painted onto the fabric between the intricate wax pattern. After the dye dries, these first two steps can be repeated to produce multiple layers of design and color.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px;">
<img alt="" src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0895/5446/files/MG_7870small_1_1024x1024.jpg?7149684832044390946" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; float: none; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />The dye is set by soaking the fabric in a fixative. Finally, the fabric is boiled to remove the wax and reveal the original fabric color along with the new layers of design. You can tell a piece is truly batik when the colors and the design are on both sides of the fabric, whereas screen printing would be one-sided. </div>

The women make amazingly beautiful and high-quality bags! The process is impressive, and the product even more so. Shop our website, <a href="http://www.elevita.com/">www.Elevita.com</a>, for the Perfect Pouch and Best Bag Ever.<br />
<br />
We insist that our artisans set their own fair prices. Then, in an effort to sell as many items for them as possible, we price the goods as low as we can, instead of marking them up. The result is that those who purchase these awesome products quickly realize that they could be sold for much more than the price they paid for them! This model gives our artisans more orders and our customers a great deal. We think it's a win-win!<br />

It is a nonprofit that promotes self-reliance through micro-enterprise in the Philippines, India, and Cambodia. Pearls With Purpose trains underprivileged women and families in developing countries to make fine jewelry that can be sold in the US at fair trade prices.<div>

When people first started wearing pearls centuries ago, they wore them as a statement of beauty, wealth, power, and exclusiveness. The beauty hasn't changed, but these pearls can be a statement of compassion, inclusiveness, and global consciousness, as every purchase gives the makers greater independence and purpose and enables them to provide food and education for their children.</div>

<br />
This year Frank and Maxima Cajumban celebrated their 37th anniversary...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Frank is the very talented woodcarver who makes a 17-piece nativity for Elevita. We are very happy for him and Maxima and their beautiful family!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another noteworthy recent event was the birth of a healthy baby to Rosalie Blanza, one of our beadworkers.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rosalie says, "Here's my baby. That's why I really need extra income and it was a blessing that you have a surprise order. Thank you!" Elevita is happy to help in any way possible, and we are grateful to know that both mother and baby are doing well. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
"About us we are OK. I am working on some decorations for Christmas, and I started working on some hand crafted POINSETTIAS. And I just wanted to show my craft to you. I am really excited for Christmas. It is my favorite time of the year. I feel like I am a child. When I was small I always stare at my neighbors home filled with bright lights and colorful decorations. And sometimes I feel pity to my family. But now that you have helped me discover my talent in crafting I can make our own Christmas decorations!!"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Elevita is very happy that Louela's talent not only helps her earn a living, but also brings her confidence, satisfaction, and joy. </div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;">We would like to introduce one of our newest artisans. Heng Sreymom has recently joined Elevita and creates the most wonderful bags. She is 33-years-old and was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She has no formal education, though she can read a little. She is a single mom with two delightful boys, ages 9 and 10. Her husband left her five years ago leaving her with no clear way to support herself and her children. Recently she learned how to sew and has specialized in sewing beautiful, high quality handbags. With Elevita's help, she hopes to broaden her market and sell her handbags to a wider clientele so she can properly care for her children and herself. We are delighted to have Heng Sreymom join the Elevita team of artisans. </span></h3>

</div>
Sok Chan lives in Battambang, Cambodia. She is a single mother and is bound to a wheelchair, but she does not let these challenges keep her from trying to live a happy and productive life. Ever since she was given the opportunity to sew wallets and purses for <a href="http://www.elevita.com/String_Wallet_p/ep.htm" target="_blank">Elevita</a>, Sok Chan has been able to afford the luxury of a little recreational activity. Now she is the leader of a Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team! If a picture is worth a thousand words, about six-thousand words are presented here as snapshots of Sok Chan's life:<br />

Recently she has been working hard on some fabulous new designs for 2015. Here is a sneak peak at her new star ornament design:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu-zF0ZqbSjeDf3s7BtFU8CB86mcEnx31-kh1u7jDLKmP7L76tpIR8IXd8ZLzq77FgaSNU36bWCg2Fdh-m_iXCATP_jrJlI-qBPh1yFBYRxC0DqgoFK65YYl6OkRtSKBpAkOeFOeXmBcc/s1600/Star.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu-zF0ZqbSjeDf3s7BtFU8CB86mcEnx31-kh1u7jDLKmP7L76tpIR8IXd8ZLzq77FgaSNU36bWCg2Fdh-m_iXCATP_jrJlI-qBPh1yFBYRxC0DqgoFK65YYl6OkRtSKBpAkOeFOeXmBcc/s1600/Star.jpg" height="320" width="244" /></a></div>
<br />
In January, Elevita received a card from Louela which reads: "Another wonderful year is about to end and another year is about to come. Me and my family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Elevita. Our lives suddenly have a beautiful twist: Before, buying food and clothing for my family is a big problem, but through your help we are able to eat food we seldom bought before...thank you, thank you! There is nothing I can do to repay for your kindness and generosity. We love you!"<br />
<br />
She enclosed a photo of her family:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"When Elevita purchased the first order of my items I used the money paying some of my expenses. First quarter of 2012 I decided to pursue my dream, a dream to have my own house. This is my dream house. It's not yet fully constructed but I'm praying and hoping that next Christmas I will be celebrating in my own house thru the help of Elevita and those who buy my items. I'm proud and thankful to say that. Thank you. God bless you. I really appreciate your help and support."</div>

</h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Because Elevita's management is entirely volunteer, we are able to donate the net profits from our sales to support humanitarian projects in the developing countries from which we source products.</span></span></span></h3>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span></span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Elevita's first project was to </span><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">help to build a hostel for young girls in the rural village of Keru, India. This is a remote area where, due to long distances to school and safety issues along the roads, girls who live in Rajasthan ended their formal schooling from their village school at age 12. They had had no opportunity to attend Secondary School since it was too far for them to travel to on a daily basis, and there was no place for them to stay if they went for the week. By not continuing with their schooling, these young girls were often married by age 13 and young mothers by age 14-15 and the cycle of poverty continued. </span></span></h3>

<h3>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Elevita, in conjunction with an existing local group, His Highness Maharaja Hanwant Singhi Charitable Trust, worked together to build </span><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">a hostel where young girls from Rajasthan could safely stay </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">during the week </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">while attending their secondary school courses.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"> Together we raised approximately $31,500 and it has taken almost 4 years to complete this girls' hostel. </span></h3>

<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">The hostel is nearly finished and will open as soon as it is furnished. Once furnished, 60 </span><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">girls ages 12-18-years-old from this rural community will be able to attend school and work on their secondary education courses. </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">Giving these girls an education will help them improve their lives, and subsequently the lives of their families and villages. It is an investment that will pay dividends for generations. </span></span></span></h3>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large; text-align: center;">Baxter Employee Helps Elevate Global Artisans Out of Poverty</span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal; text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When Keyne Monson, Baxter vice president, market development, and his wife Kirsten visited India for the first time together in May 2010, they were overcome by the intense poverty they witnessed. They met many people who possessed impressive skills for creating beautiful and useful items, but faced challenges. Some were living with disabilities, had difficult access to markets, or were located in distressed areas, which limited their opportunities to sell their quality goods.</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Together, Keyne and Kirsten created a website and non-profit organization, Elevita, to help alleviate poverty worldwide by creating economic opportunities for under-privileged people in developing countries by bringing their skills and creations to market. Over the past four years, Elevita has enabled more the 500 artisans to earn an increased income, which has had a ripple effect on their families and communities. Keyne and Kirsten are helped by a group of unpaid volunteers and advisors, including their six children, who range from ages 17 to two years old.</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">"It's amazing how many people are willing to engage once they catch the vision of what we are doing," say Keyne, who in his day job, works on business model innovation projects that help advance access to healthcare for people in developing areas of the world. "We're convinced that if more people were simply aware of and exposed to the extreme poverty in which the majority of the world lives, there would be a lot more focus on trying to lift under-privileged people out of poverty in a sustainable way." </span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Any profits are donated to humanitarian projects, particularly in education. Proceeds have helped fund projects such as a hostel where rural girls in Rajasthan, India can stay safely while attending secondary school (planned to help 200 girls each year for four years); scholarships through a partnership with BELIEVE to five girls in the Philippines so they can attend both secondary school and college (total of eight years education); purchasing sewing machines for women in Cambodia so they can become self-reliant; and purchasing an industrial oven in the Philippines that allows dozens of local women to bake capiz shells for creating bowls, frames, jewelry, and other wares. </span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Through this two-fold approach of creating economic and educational opportunities, Keyne and Kirsten hope that Elevita can help countless people in developing counties across the globe. The non-profit now helps artisans or artisan groups in seven developing countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ghana, India, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Uganda. </span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">"We believe in the goodness of humanity and in people's ability to respond in times of crisis to help their fellow neighbor, and hope that Elevita can provide a bridge for many people who live in the developed world to meaningfully reach out to others in need," Keyne says. </span></span></h3>

She was writing to tell us how grateful she was that after receiving Elevita's payment for her goods, she was able not only to pay for her children's school and purchase rice, but she also had enough left over to go on a journey to search for some long-lost relatives. Here is her report:<br />
<br />
"Today my mother and I went to her relatives her biological parents side. My mother was adopted at age 3 and she has very limited information about her grandparents and relatives, I ask her to accompany me to search for informations of her deceased ancestors. It was a challenging task we have for ourselves. It was a long ride, and hike on a slippery and uneven road and hill, I just wasn't able to take pictures some of the scenery..We met the wife of my mothers cousin, we ask information and then proceed to another area, then we meet my mother other cousin, she works as a house help, so we just sit outside the house while I ask her names of their ancestors, since we are not allowed to enter her employers house..I am very grateful that I have names now, although its not many but the opportunity to meet my aunties for the first time make me happy and also my mother...although my money for the fare is very budgeted, but my mother and I are able to come home, and we even bought snacks for the children. I spent money in searching my ancestors but the happiness my mother and I felt can never be bought or exchange in any material things. Glad for the technology, we have access now with our relatives through txt message..I attached photos sister about our adventure this morning.. :)" <br />
<br />
This is just one of many examples of how Elevita is improving lives worldwide.<br />

</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: normal;">In Cambodia, the population is roughly 15 million. One third of the population lives on less than $1 a day. These are mainly the rural poor who typically live in the provinces and small villages. They usually grow and raise their own food. The one-dollar-a-day they theoretically make is made by selling any excess of their crops or livestock. What can that one dollar buy in Cambodia? One of the following:</span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">1 pound of rice, some pork fat, and green</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">1 Mango</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">1 Krama (traditional scarf worn around the head)</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2 gallons drinking water</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2 cans Coca Cola</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1 kilo clean laundry</span></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2 bowls of noodles</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<h3 style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">It is always humbling to get a glimpse of what our artisans lives are like. It provides the inspiration for Elevita to keep doing all that we can to encourage them in their efforts and enterprises to improve their economic situation and to provide educational opportunities for their children. </span></span></h3>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Elevita is indeed privileged to work with our hard working and entrepreneurial Cambodian Artisans.</span></span> </h3>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Elevita recently received a letter from Darcia Cordez, a young women we are sponsoring with a scholarship for her education in the Philippines. She wrote of her summer break from school:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">"It's summer vacation ... no cares for two months, but I still want summer vacation to be productive so I look for something good to do -- something that makes me productive. I spend my vacation teaching in a summer class. It is really challenging, especially handling students of diverse personalities and interests. This is my first time to be in the field of teaching high school students. I'm striving hard to be able to meet this challenging experience successfully."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Darcia understands that if a young woman is educated, her family will be educated. There is a saying, when you educate a girl you educate a village. If she can read and write all her children will be able to read and write. The more educated a woman, the more educated her family, and the more prosperous her community. That is why Darcia wants to be a teacher. Elevita is proud to sponsor Darcia Cardez through Believe International and we salute her for spending her summer vacation teaching others. </span><br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjg7hJ5_4dDPA1KK8PYf6kmV2c_X8I69mD_7eAUgfdjBO4uaq8QE_DIupOqIdmUn5jlYMu0Yhk3CCEl1Bmuc5_PqtYIEWYY7eEbYWOVvKuO9QpHWVJbsr3K5S0y8Wk5_NyVbpHXFAteCc/s1600/HomeOfFlorita.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjg7hJ5_4dDPA1KK8PYf6kmV2c_X8I69mD_7eAUgfdjBO4uaq8QE_DIupOqIdmUn5jlYMu0Yhk3CCEl1Bmuc5_PqtYIEWYY7eEbYWOVvKuO9QpHWVJbsr3K5S0y8Wk5_NyVbpHXFAteCc/s1600/HomeOfFlorita.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As devastating as the photo may appear, miraculously, the expensive capiz firing oven was undamaged, and the artisans have been working quickly to rebuild and fill orders.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sadly, the home of Rosalia Doloires, one of Elevita's placemat weavers, was completely destroyed. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The home was a makeshift dwelling hastily constructed by Rosalia's family after escaping the destruction from Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Thankfully, everyone in the family is safe, and they have started once more to rebuild their lives.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Florita also reports that nativity artisan Jonalyn Hubilla received damage to her roof, and that angel artisan Nina Mena's home was apparently destroyed. Elevita is grateful to all those who continue to support the efforts of these underprivileged families by purchasing their products on Elevita.com. </div>
